The attack and the football match.
I think everything changed really as soon as that police statement came out yesterday in terms of describing the capability of the weapon and I think actually at the game yesterday the atmosphere was incredible, the way that both founders came together, the solidarity that both showed but it’s, it’s very difficult to come away from a football match like that and and and in terms of the emotional intensity of the game was something that I’ve never experienced before.

Interview with a kidney donor.
I’m a volunteer kidney donor and this started just about 6 years ago, for a young lady who played soccer with my niece. And I saw on Facebook one day that she was really sick and because I didn’t know her really well outside of our Facebook friendship, kind of watching each other’s posts, I thought it was a bit of a personal question but I thought I’ll just ask and so I sent her a private message and…

The British Lunch Hour

The British lunch hour.
Does the British lunch have a future? Not long ago we got together with BBC Good Food Magazine commissioned some research into the great, or not so great, British lunch and hold on to your lunch box if you have one because what we found just might shock you. You won’t be surprised to hear that the lunch hour is no more. It shrunk to lunch 25 minutes and 24 seconds. Not quite so catchy.

Discussion about school changes

Discussion about school changes.
Over the past 20 years, Plymouth Canton has gone from an almost all white district to one where around 30 percent of the students are minorities. There are now more than 60 world languages spoken in the hallways. Rather than see this as a challenge, the district saw it as an opportunity. They started investing heavily in professional development to train their teachers in something called “culturally proficient instruction”. That means things like making sure the library has books with diverse characters and that teachers incorporate the history and culture of their students into lesson plans.
How has the increase in minorities changed the school?

“…a little bit like weeds in the garden erm you know a plant growing in the wrong place is a weed and animal existing in the wrong place is a pest. Problems with Attention Span

Problems with attention span.
Was to simply pay attention to my breath and when my mind wandered, to bring it back. Sounded simple enough. Yet I’d sit on the silent retreats, sweating through t-shirts in the middle of winter. I’d take naps every chance I got because it was really hard work, actually it was exhausting. The instruction was simple enough but I was missing something really important. So why is it so hard to pay attention? Well studies show that even when we’re really trying to pay attention to something, like maybe this talk, at some point about half of us will drift off into a daydream or have this urge to check our Twitter feed.
What does the study say about the ability to stay focused?

History of Marriage
Source: youtube.com
History of marriage.
When and why did humans decide they wanted to stay together forever? We’re going to discuss that and more right now. Let’s get started. Marriage is actually a concept so old that it predates recorded history. In ancient times the two being wed often had no say in who they were going to marry. Families would use marriage as a way to form an alliance between other families. Marriage was taken very seriously often having to do with money and or land rather than love and emotion. This would be the case for a long time up until the eighteenth century. The industrial revolution played a huge role in marrying for love. With the rise of the middle class in the nineteenth century, men would be able to work to afford a marriage. They got to choose a spouse without having to worry about land or parental approval. Arranged marriages aren’t completely out of the picture today though.

Structure of the brain.
If you sucked all of the moisture out of your brain and broke it down to its constituent nutritional content, what would it look like? Most of the weight of your dehydrated brain would come from the fats also known as lipids. In the remaining brain matter, you would find proteins and amino acids, traces of micro nutrients and glucose. The brain is, of course, more than just the sum of its nutritional parts but each component does have a distinct impact on functioning, development, mood and energy. So that post-lunch apathy for late night alertness you might be feeling, well that could simply be the effects of food on your brain.

Passion for Cake
Source: bbc.com
A passion for cake
An an an odd thing is that making a cake makes me feel like an earth mother but I’m just dispensing goodness and connection. There’s nothing in all savoury dishes I make that gives me this feeling that somehow I am dispensing goodness, I am connecting people back to their roots, or the earth. It’s a ridiculous idea that just mixing up this sweet confection and slicing it up and handing it round gives one this marvellous feeling. What’s clear is that in having these feelings I’m not alone. I mean the enormous and much remarked upon success of “The Great British Bake Off” which now has audiences of almost 15 million. I mean estimates of the value of the baking market, cake tins and all the rest of the ever growing paraphernalia are nearly 2 billion pounds. It is an extraordinary thing.

Halloween
Source: youtube.com
Halloween
Ever wonder about the history of Halloween? Well it’s believed to originate way back in the day of the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain. People would ward off ghosts by lighting bonfires and wearing spooky costumes. Neeto! But where does the name Halloween come from? Let’s find out. Way back in the eighth century, November 1st was designated as a time to honour all saints by Pope Gregory III, this was known as All Saints Day and it incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The night before All Saints day was referred to is All Hallow’s Eve which later turned into Halloween. So this is where the name comes from. But let’s talk a little bit more about November 1st. Why is it so special? Well this day marked the end of the nice and toasty summer months and the beginning of the dark and cold winter. This time was often associated with human death and the Celtics believe that on the night of the 31st, the boundary between the living and the spirit world would become blurred.
Why is Halloween celebrated around the 1st of November?

“So, these figures released today on World Heritage Day are showing us that around 45 percent of the natural world heritage sites are threatened by the illegal wildlife trade and these are places which are recognized as being of outstanding international importance for their natural beauty and they are deserving of the highest levels of protection so the fact that so many are threatened by the illegal wildlife trade is something that we need to tackle.”

Origins of money
Source: youtube.com
Origins of money.
But money wasn’t always used to exchange things. In very primitive economies money was used as a way to build social relationships such as arranged marriages. Most people think the birth of money is a consequence of barter. I mean if you want to buy someone’s chicken and they really want apples, well if you don’t have apples, you’re out of luck and you are gonna be bombarded by doctors. So the argument is that money came about as a way to make this exchange less inconvenient. However anthropologist David Graeber disagrees. He claims that money came about as a way to quantify debt. Say you want your neighbour’s cow; it’s a really good looking cow. Instead of trading something for it, he would just give it to you with the knowledge that you owed him one, so money came about as a way to assign value to this date and make it transferable.
One theory of the origins of money says that…

My son likes to play capital cities. You’ll know the one. One of us has the atlas, we turn to the back pages where there are flags for every country in the world. Underneath the flag is the name of the country, the capital city and the size of the population. Whoever’s got the atlas barks out the name of the country and the other one has to reply with the name of the capital city. If you think about it 60 years ago my brother and I used to play the same game in the same way.

Are Older Drivers Dangerous?
Source: bbc.com
Are older drivers dangerous?
Now here’s a question; should drivers be forced to take another driving test after they have hit the age of 70? Many people believe they should.
More than 260,000 people have signed a petition to that effect and it’s possible it’ll be debated in parliament. The petition was started by Ben Brooks Dutton whose wife was killed by an 85 year old driver. “I car came speeding around the corner, skimmed my son’s push chair tax but then struck my wife and she died at the scene. When the driver had to choose between an accelerator and a brake, he wasn’t able to make that decision, he wasn’t able to react. He was driving an automatic vehicle and he thought he was breaking and as he broke harder he was actually accelerating faster. I think there needs to be some sort of test to check that we’re well enough to drive and at the moment it’s a self assessment system that doesn’t do that. No one wants to take someone’s life, no one wants that hanging over them for the rest the life but a car is a powerful weapon.

Leicester City Football Match

Leicester city football match
I think in terms of the football, the action on the field I mean it was it a disappointing decision from the referee, I mean at the time we didn’t have any replays in the press box office in the Vicente Calderon stadium and you have to say on first reaction we saw it that it was not a penalty. Now, thanks to the advent of social media we’ve been getting lots of still images, people sending us comments saying “it wasn’t a penalty, it wasn’t a penalty”. Now sometimes football fans can be a little one-eyed, can’t they? However looking at those messages that we were getting in their numbers, it was unanimous in it not being a penalty and Ian saw those replays at half-time and seen them since and it just wasn’t a penalty
What happened during the match at the Vicente Calderon stadium?
Power of Modern Technology

Power of modern technology.
We live in an age when technology can connect to more unremittingly than ever before. We can use this power in all manner of ways; to campaign for the civil rights of strangers, send pictures of dinners into every available time zone, to argue across continents or to force employees into endlessly serving their corporate monsters. We may bully, threaten or worse. Strangers and observers scramble to coin new terms for our novel online miseries, like Stanford Duck Syndrome, first used to describe stressed-out students attending Stanford University who believe the Facebook version of fellow students; the outside image of academically capable swans gliding effortlessly towards success. Seeing such apparent ease the students feel like panicky ducks, desperately paddling in hopes of staying equally smooth on their surface.
